I’ve been recently listening to a lot of Mastodon again lately for some reason and remembered how much I loved this album when it came out. I remember being so captivated and perplexed as to how a band could write a song that literally sounds like the ocean. I was 15 when this album came out and had been playing guitar for a little while.

I see hearts alive get the love it rightly deserves and it is my favorite song of theirs, but I don’t think Joseph merrick gets nearly enough appreciation and sort of gets written off as just a cool outro. The whole album is like this but I feel like the ocean timbre really peaks with the last three songs (aqua dementia - hearts alive - Joseph merrick). It’s most apparent in the guitar playing, the way they use unison notes, tie notes, and electric and acoustic layering is just unmistakably ocean like. EOS is about a wanderer who is cursed by a sultan to wander the desert.

Leviathan is incredibly special in this way because it does both of these uniquely well, but it is especially impressive to me the way that the songwriting absolutely nails the theme of this album. Leviathan is a loose retelling of Moby-Dick.
You can write an album with lyrics about being in a snowstorm but does the actual sound of the album make you feel like you are in one. I think the latter of these two is often more challenging to pull off. Which is kind of poetic considering how Mastodon formed on a High on Fire concert. Plus, this is just an extra trivial fact, but I love how the year after Mastodon won their Grammy, High On Fire won theirs. A concept album is conceptually about a topic like a book or story, while a themed album targets a certain atmosphere or tone and usually extends into the actual sonic qualities of the songwriting and production. Its just top-notch Mastodon from beginning to end, and one of the better introductions to their sound you can have. So I am a really big fan of concept albums and themed albums but consider them to be different things (though an album can be both).
